{"id":35818,"date":"2023-06-13T19:20:05","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T17:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deftech.ch\/?p=35818"},"modified":"2023-06-13T19:21:51","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T17:21:51","slug":"hear-me-meow-us-air-force-tests-angry-kitten-ew-system-on-reaper-uas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deftech.ch\/fr\/2023\/06\/13\/hear-me-meow-us-air-force-tests-angry-kitten-ew-system-on-reaper-uas\/","title":{"rendered":"Hear me \u201cmeow\u201d: US Air Force tests Angry Kitten EW system on Reaper UAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Illustration: US Air Force\/John McRell<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In May 2023, the US Air Force successfully tested the Angry Kitten ALQ-167 Electronic Countermeasures Pod on an MQ-9 Reaper uncrewed aerial system.<\/p>\n<p>Angry Kitten was developed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and utilizes \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/air-force-angry-kitten-system-explained\/\">commercial electronics, custom hardware development, novel machine-learning software and a unique test bed to evaluate unprecedented levels of adaptability in [Electronic Warfare] technology,<\/a>\u201d By incorporating a machine-learning enabled software defined radio it can dynamically switch signal and frequencies, making it more adaptive to identifying and countering a wide range of threats. According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2022\/08\/angry-kitten-electronic-attack-pod-bares-its-claws-during-air-force-tests\/\">Breaking Defense<\/a>, <\/em>this &#8220;cognitive EW approach&#8221; uses machine learning to choose a jamming technique, assess whether it was effective, and respond to an adversary\u2019s own use of electronic attack techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The system has largely been used by aggressor squadrons to simulate adversary electronic warfare capabilities. According to Major Aaron Aguilar, the Air Force\u2019s 556<sup>th<\/sup> Test and Evaluation Squadron assistant director of operations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/electronic-warfare\/2023\/05\/19\/fur-midable-us-air-force-pairs-angry-kitten-jammer-with-reaper-drone\/\">\u201cthe proliferation and persistence of MQ-9s in theater allows us to fill traditional platform capability gaps [in EW] that may be present<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0He also observed that the Predator\u2019s ability to persist in an environment was crucial, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/electronic-warfare\/2023\/05\/19\/fur-midable-us-air-force-pairs-angry-kitten-jammer-with-reaper-drone\/\">saying that<\/a> \u201cfifteen hours of persistent noise integrated with a large force package will affect an adversary . . . and gets at the heart of strategic deterrence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EW has become a more significant priority for the US Air Force and across many militaries throughout the world.
